Tucked just a few steps away from the buzzing heart of San Miguel de Allende’s historic center lies one of the city’s best-kept (yet Instagram-famous) secrets: Los Lavaderos de El Chorro — a place where soap, stone, and stories have flowed for centuries.
Yep, we’re talking about an actual public laundry area that dates all the way back to the 18th century. But trust us, this isn’t your average washtub setup.
A Place Where the Water (and Gossip) Flowed
Once upon a time — specifically around 1732 — a man named Manuel Francisco de la Canal had a bright idea: let’s use the natural spring that gave birth to San Miguel and create public baths and laundry stations. Practical? Yes. Revolutionary? Absolutely.
The upper part of what’s now known as El Chorro was home to a series of rooms: five public baths, one private (fancy!), and one that housed the actual water source. From there, gravity took over, sending clean spring water downhill to a series of lavaderos — 10 basins first, and then a lower plaza with 19 washing stations built in a charming square formation.
These weren’t just functional. They became a hub — a social space where Sanmiguelense women from every corner of town would gather. There, they scrubbed clothes on rough concrete slabs, swapped stories, laughed, and caught up on the latest neighborhood happenings.
Washing by Hand, With a View
Picture this: a shady stone plaza, birds chirping, the sound of water gently trickling through clay pipes, and women with baskets of laundry chatting as they scrub linen under the Mexican sun. It was community, tradition, and practicality all rolled into one.
The design was genius. Each washbasin was set at an angle for easy drainage, spaced perfectly for one washer per station. Water flowed freely down the channel, letting each person take what they needed without holding up the line — no plumbing degrees required.
Once everything was squeaky clean, they’d string up clotheslines across the square and let the sun do the rest. Eco-friendly before it was cool!
